Hockey Fans, it’s Saturday again, which means it’s time for another STATurday, our weekly award article where we hand out awards to statistical excellence in the NHL, due to some issues with our stat tracking software, some awards cannot be handed out this week, and it will be noted:
Sharpshooter Award – Individual: Awarded to Vladimir Tarasenko of the St. Louis Blues for finding the back of the net 5 times this week.
Sharpshooter Award – Team: Awarded to the Washington Capitals, who scored 14 goals this week.
“Defense?” Award: Awarded to the Washington Capitals, who surrendered 16 goals this week.
Teammate Award: Awarded to Alex Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals, who helped his teammates find the back of the net 6 times this week.
“Get on the ice” Award: Tie between Nathan Gerbe of the Carolina Hurricanes and Brad Marchand of the Boston Bruins, both of whom held a plus-minus rating of +6.
Bad Omen Award: Awarded to P. K. Subban of the Montreal Canadiens, who held a plus-minus rating of -5 this week.
Stalwart Award: Awarded to Craig Anderson of the Ottawa Senators, for holding a GAA of 0.50 this week.
Reflexes Award: Awarded to Craig Anderson of the Ottawa Senators, who managed a save percentage of .985.
Leaky Award: Despite Justin Peters having a worse save percentage, the sample size for the recipient this week is much larger; as such, it’s awarded to Carey Price of the Montreal Canadiens, with a GAA of 5.01 this week.
Third Stringer Award: Awarded to Carey Price of the Montreal Canadiens, who held a save percentage of .851 this week.
Sin Bin Award – Individual: Awarded to Steve Downie of the Pittsburgh Penguins, who spent 24 minutes in the penalty box this week.
Sin Bin Award – Team: Awarded to the Winnipeg Jets, who spent a total of 89 minutes in the penalty box.
Ice Pack Award: Awarded to Toby Enstrom of the Winnipeg Jets, who blocked 15 shots this week.
Crusher Award – Individual: Awarded to Ryan Reaves of the St. Louis Blues, who accumulated 19 hits this week.
Crusher Award – Team: Awarded to the Washington Capitals, who doled out 128 hits this week.
“Pass to Nowhere” award: not awarded this week due to technical issues.
“MINE!” Award: not awarded this week due to technical issues.
Possession Award: not awarded this week due to technical issues.
Stick Tape Award: Awarded to Alex Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals, who tested opposing goalies 23 times this week.
In-Game Practice Award: Awarded to Michal Neuvirth of the Buffalo Sabres, who faced 122 shots this week.
3 Stars: Awarded to Craig Anderson of the Ottawa Senators (0.50 GAA, .985 SV%, 2-0-0, 1 SO), Mark Giordano of the Calgary Flames (2 G, 4 A, +4, 8 SOG, 1 hit, 12 shots blocked), and Vladimir Tarasenko of the St. Louis Blues (5 G, 2 A, +4, 17 SOG, 4 takeaways).
Key games this week: Tonight will see a clash of Original Six teams when the Toronto Maple Leafs take on the New York Rangers. The Nashville Predators take on the St. Louis Blues in what is sure to be an exhilarating game. The Pittsburgh Penguins look to extend their dominance over the Buffalo Sabres when they meet at the First Niagara Center. The night is capped off by a showdown between the struggling Los Angeles Kings and the surging Vancouver Canucks.
Tomorrow will see the game between the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Ottawa Senators originally scheduled on October 22 but postponed due to a shooting near Parliament Hill. The San Jose Sharks take on the Chicago Blackhawks.
Tuesday will see the Pittsburgh Penguins return to Madison Square Garden to face the New York Rangers for the first time since being eliminated in last year’s playoffs, while the Colorado Avalanche take on the New York Islanders in Long Island.
Wednesday will see the Boston Bruins take on the Toronto Maple Leafs at the Air Canada Centre and the Anaheim Ducks take on the Los Angeles Kings for the first time since losing two straight to bow out to the eventual Stanley Cup Champions.
Thursday sees the Boston Bruins visit eternal rivals Montreal Canadiens, while the San Jose Sharks visit the Tampa Bay Lightning and the St. Louis Blues have another go at the Nashville Predators.
Friday will see the Columbus Blue Jackets take on the Philadelphia Flyers, which will mark the first time Scott Hartnell returns to Philly since being traded in the off-season. The Chicago Blackhawks will take on the Detroit Red Wings in an Original Six match-up, and the Pittsburgh Penguins will take on the Toronto Maple Leafs at the Air Canada Centre.
