How the Sabres Prospects fared at the World Juniors
Jake McCabe (Sabres 2nd rd pick 2012)
McCabe was the USA captain at this year’s tournament. From what I could see, he is very smart with the puck. He looks to be a solid player and I am excited to see him in a Sabres uniform down the road. McCabe lead the USA team to a gold medal at the tournament. His biggest game was perhaps in the semifinals vs. Canada. McCabe scored 2 goals and was named USA’s Player of the Game. The captain finished the tournament with 6 points (3g-3a).
Mikhail Grigorenko (Sabres 1st rd pick 2012)
Grigorenko had a decent tournament for Team Russia as they won the Bronze medal in a 6-5 OT thriller over Canada. The big center was the 3rd leading scorer for Russia. (2g-4a). He will probably return to his QMJHL team Quebec Remparts where he is 4th in the league in goals with 29.
Andrey Makarov (Undrafted signee in Sept 2012)
Split time in net for Team Russia. Played in the bronze medal game vs. a very talented Canadian team. Made 40 saves on 45 shots to help Russia win the bronze medal. In 3 games, went 2-1 with a 2.99 GAA. And .933 save percentage. Could possibly see time in Rochester at some point this season. Will go back to his WHL team Saskatoon Blades where he is 15-13-1 with a 2.84 GAA.
Joel Armia (Sabres 1st rd pick 2011)
Armia had one of the best offensive outputs in the tournament of any player. The Finnish forward was the 2nd leading scorer in the tourney with 12 points (6g-6a). His 6 goals also ranked 2nd among players. Armia plays for Assat Pori of the SM-liiga, a Finnish league. With a tournament like this, perhaps Armia will see some time in Rochester later on this season.
