Deadline Deals: Tim Thomas to Dallas/Dan Ellis to Florida
Veteran netminder Tim Thomas has been traded from the Florida Panthers to the Dallas Stars in exchange for fellow goalie Dan Ellis.
In 418 career NHL games, Thomas has gone 212-141-48 with a .920 SP and 2.51 GAA. 31 of his 212 wins have come in shutouts.
After taking a year off last season, Thomas has performed well on a weak Florida Panthers team, going 16-20-3 with a .909 SP and 2.87 GAA.
With Dallas, Thomas will begin by backing up Lehtonen, pushing Kari to be better in net (which he has of late).
This is a really interesting trade, as Dallas didn’t appear to have goalie problems.
The Stars will give Timmy a chance to win games with a much better team in front of him. He’s proven that he still has a lot to offer, and Dallas needs all the help they can get as they scramble to make the playoffs. As of now, they possess the second Western Conference wild card spot.
For Dan Ellis, he will be Roberto Luongo’s new crease buddy (his third in less than a year).
Ellis has one year left on his contract ($900,000 cap hit), and has a weak 5-6-0 record with a .900 SP and 3.04 GAA.
