Flames Desperately Looking For Answers
The Flames struggles have not let up this year as they are twelfth place in the western conference. If you’re reading this than you probably already know about the ongoing goalie issues that have constantly burdened the team ever since Mikka Kiprusoff’s injury (grade two MCL sprain) on February 5th. Not only have they struggled in goal, they have been struggling offensively also. Flames star players such as Jarome Iginla and Mike Cammilleri have failed to put up numbers they are expected to so far this season. Iginla only has three goals this year, and is off to his common slow start he seems to have every year.
The Flames have posted a 7-7-3 record so far this season. People may try to pitch one another excuses as to why the Flames are failing to succeed this year, but the bottom line is that the team needs to win. There are no excuses, numbers don’t lie. The teams inconsistent play has held them back from winning games this year and if they do not change this the playoffs will not be in sight.
The teams second last game was a win against the Minnesota Wild. The Flames scored early in the first period on breakaway goal from Alex Tanguay on an amazing pass from Jay Bouwmeester. Bouwmeester has been one of the bright spots on the organization thus far this year. However, the Wild would tie the game by the end of the period by a goal from Charlie Coyle. The Flames would pull through as Matt Stajan came up big in the third with the winning goal and an empty netter for some insurance.
The Flames most recently downed the Phoenix Coyotes 5-4 on Sunday night. Jarome Iginla had two goals in the contest. Although Calgary won, it is easy to over look or shadow their goaltending troubles. Not many teams in the NHL are able to score five goals every game. If the Flames want to continue to win they are going have to reduce their goals against.
The Flames will be looking to build off their last two victories when they take on the Minnesota Wild on Tuesday February 26th at 8pmET in Minnesota.
