Schenn Suspended, Hartnell out Indefinitely
The National Hockey League has suspended Philadelphia Flyers forward Brayden Schenn for one game for his hit on New Jersey Devils defenseman Anton Volchenckov. The incident occurred on Tuesday January 24th during the game between the Flyers and the Devils in which the Devils won 3-0. During the second period on Tuesday, Schenn seemed to have left his feet as he delivered a hit to the Devils defenseman. Even though there was no penalty assessed on the play, Schenn will be forced to miss the Flyers game against the Rangers on Thursday. In addition, he will forfeit $4,702.70 of his average annual salary. Schenn is 21 years of age and has played in all three of the Flyers games so far this season. After starting the season on the first line, he was moved down to the third line in advance of the Flyers game versus the Devils. The young prospect has one assist through his three games played and regularly sees second-unit power-play time. He will be eligible to return to action on Saturday when Philadelphia takes on the Florida Panthers.
In addition to losing Schenn for a game, the Flyers will have to go an extended period of time without first line winger Scott Hartnell. General manager Paul Holgrem has announced Hartnell will be out indefinitely after he suffered a left foot injury during Tuesday’s tilt against New Jersey. He took a point shot to the foot from his own teammate on Tuesday and was forced to leave the game. The Flyers are hoping Hartnell can build on his all-star performance last year in which he notched 67 points. So far this year, Hartnell has put up one assist alongside 13 penalty minutes. In addition to losing Schenn and Hartnell for Thursday’s battle against the New York Rangers, the Flyers will still be without star forward Daniel Briere who is recovering from a fracture in his left wrist.
