Anthony Mantha Scores Every Goal for Detroit in 4-3 Win Over Dallas
Detroit’s home-opener was last night as the Red Wings played host to the Dallas Stars. Detroit was riding high from Saturday’s 5-3 win in Nashville as they attempted to carry the momentum into Sunday.

Niklas Kronwall, having retired in the off-season, dropped the ceremonial first puck to commence Detroit’s first home game of the year. Nick Lidstrom was also in attendance.
A few new faces are on the roster this year. Valtteri Filppula is back for his second stint with the team, centering a line with Taro Hirose (who debuted last season) and Luke Glendening. Adam Erne, formerly of the Tampa Bay Lightning, was on the third line alongside Frans Nielsen and Christoffer Ehn. Lastly. Patrik Nemeth played opposite Mike Green on the second defensive pairing. Star forward Andreas Athanasiou and veteran blueliner Jonathan Ericsson remain out with injuries.
Roope Hintz of the Stars kicked off the scoring at the 10:57 mark of the first and with 3:11 to play in the 1st Tyler Seguin made it 2-0 after he deked his way past the Red Wings’ defense and wristed a quick shot past goalie Jonathan Bernier.
Detroit stormed back in the second with a pair of goals scored by Anthony Mantha. The first was scored in the first minute of the 2nd on a ripper from the top of the right faceoff circle while the second came near the midway mark of the game. After two periods, Mantha led all players with 7 total attempted shots.
In the third, Mantha scored only 15 seconds in for the hat trick (the second of his career). But the Wings’ first lead of the game was short-lived as Hintz scored his second for the Stars to even the score. As the period rolled on, there was a parade of Stars to the penalty box, leading to a trio of power plays and two partial 5-on-3 opportunities, none of which led to any success for Detroit (they were 1-for-8 on the night).
Roope Hintz, however, managed to quickly even things up again, only 33 seconds after. As the game appeared destined for overtime, Mantha scored his fourth in the final minute.
The last seconds following the goal were frenetic and action-packed. Bernier did a good job of holding his posts as the Stars jammed and shoved the puck in the crease with numerous scoring chances. One play appeared to show the puck cross the goal line, which was promptly waived off by the referee behind the net. The review confirmed the call of no goal and the Red Wings earned their second win of the year.
Bernier said after the game that he was confident that the call was the correct one and that he felt the puck under his skate.

The Wings lost defenseman Trevor Daley during the game, and coach Blashill ruled him out for Tuesday’s game.
Also after the game, Detroit announced that forward David Pope was traded to the Vancouver Canucks for defenseman Alex Biega. Pope did not appear to be in the running for a roster spot anytime soon in Detroit, and he may have a better chance with the Canucks organization.
Detroit will host the Anaheim Ducks on Tuesday before traveling to Montreal on Thursday, and finishing the week with a home game against the Toronto Maple Leafs.
