Stars fall to the undefeated Avalanche
In a disappointing turn of events, the Dallas Stars were unable to take down the still undefeated Colorado Avalanche despite their hard work and great efforts. The Avs continued their winning streak with a 3-2 win.
The Stars came out knowing that they had a big task ahead of them and needed to work hard if they wanted to take down the Avalanche, and work hard they did. Less than a minute into the game the Avalanche were on the powerplay due to Stars defenseman Brenden Dillon picking up a two minute minor for hooking, but the Avalanche were unable to convert. Stars center Rich Peverley opened up the scoring for the night with the first goal against Semyon Varlamov, assisted by (guess who) Tyler Seguin and Jamie Benn. The 1-0 lead only lasted for a little less than eight minutes as Matt Duchene shot one past Dan Ellis for an unassisted goal. Minutes later Stars defenseman Trevor Daley picked up a two minute penalty for holding. The Avs were once again unable to convert on the powerplay, but they lit up the scoreboard once again soon after that, with Jan Hejda putting the puck in the back of the Stars net with the help of Nathan MacKinnon and P.A. Parenteau. The Stars ended the first period behind by one, with a score of 1-2 in Colorado.
Dallas came out of the first intermission looking to even up the score and were given two big opportunities as the Avalanche picked up two early penalties. It was on the second powerplay that Cody Eakin picked up the goal with just one second before it ended, assisted by Ray Whitney and Erik Cole. The tie only lasted a little while before Matt Duchene picked up a second goal of the night, assisted by Parenteau and Erik Johnson, once again giving his team the lead. Later in the period, a fight almost broke out between Stars center Shawn Horcoff and Avalanche goaltender Semyon Varlamov as Varlamov slashed Horcoff, spurring him to slash back. The altercation resulted in both player receiving a two minute minor for slashing and John Mitchell serving Varlamov’s penalty. The period soon ended with the Avalanche once again in the lead, this time 3-2.
The third period was rather uneventful, with no scoring and only one penalty, a two minute minor for slashing by Avs player Erik Johnson. Most of the period was spent with the Stars desperately trying to put another goal on the board to tie the game up, and on several occasions almost succeeding in doing so. The most notable attempt was in the last second of the game when the Stars won a faceoff and passed it to rookie Alex Chiasson, who shot the puck and almost got it past Varlamov, but the great effort put on by the Dallas Stars proved to be not quite enough as the game ending siren rang out signaling that Patrick Roy’s Avs would remain undefeated with a 3-2 victory over Dallas.
This turned out to be a terrific game and a lot of fun to watch. It was obvious that the Stars were putting up a great effort and were working hard on the ice to bring the Avalanche’s undefeated streak to an end. The Stars made a lot of great plays and worked well as a team to try to put points on the board and get pucks past the solid Varlamov. This will be a great game for the Stars to look back on, fix their problems, and learn from what they did wrong to become a better team. It was an exciting game no matter what the turnout was.
