Alex Edler banned three games
On Friday Afternoon, Brendan Shanahan, the Director of Player Safety announced that Alex Edler will be suspended for three games for his head shot on Tomas Hertl of the San Jose Sharks. The incident happened on Thursday night and can be seen here. According to Jason Brough of Pro Hockey Talk, Edler will forfeit $182,926.83 in salary, with the money going to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund per the stipulation in the new CBA.
In the video Shanahan explained that if Edler wants to make a hit like that again, he wants to get a better angle on his check before laying a hit like that. “If Edler wants to makes this check, he must take a better angle and route toward Hertl and hit him squarely through the body,” he said.
Many Canucks fans were outraged by this suspension, but matter of fact is this, Edler is a repeat offender to Mike Smith from last season, and it was a head shot. So if you put two and two together, it equals bad news for Edler. I am fine with the suspension; I believe it’s very fair, since only two nights ago before that, Brad Stuart of the Sharks had a hit just like Edler’s on New York’s Rick Nash. The only difference is Nash got injured and Hertl did not.
The Canucks will be without Edler’s services tonight when P.K. Subban and the Montreal Canadiens come into town. Kassian will return to the lineup after serving his suspension and will be looking to score some goals. Puck drop is at 7:00 PM PT
