Sunday’s Practices
Gustav Nyquist was bursting with energy in the first practice of the morning while defenseman Joe Hicketts also excelled in all drills. Hicketts has the ability to play in the AHL, but he still has one year of junior eligibility remaining, and with the wealth of defensive prospects in the pipeline, the Wings have to use it.
Defenseman Robbie Russo (Notre Dame) had (to me) the best day of his camp Sunday. He’s a solid blueliner, always has good positioning, and his passes are always on point.
Daniel Cleary was skating alone before the scrimmage while Coreau and McCollum worked with Wings goalie coach Jim Bedard.
Cuts
A number of players were either released or assigned to their respective teams on Sunday.
They are: Vili Saarijarvi, Matt Mancina, Joe Hicketts, Nick Betz, Justin Lemcke, Adam Marsh, Ty Stanton, Connor Ingram, Jerome Verrier, Dominic Turgeon, Conor McGlynn, Evan Polei, Jarett Meyer, Jalen Chatfield, and Triston Grant.
There still remains a number of camp invites still on the roster of 57. These include: forwards Mark Zengerle, Joel Rechlicz, Jeff Hoggan, and Kurt Etchegary, and defensemen Nathan Paetsch, Jared Nightingale, Andrew Prochno, and Scott Czarnowczan.
Scrimmage
The scrimmage saw Team Howe taking on Team Delvecchio in what was the lowest-scoring matchup of the camp.
Tomas Tatar (Delvecchio) scored an unassisted marker at the 7:38 mark, while veteran forward Brad Richards scored what would be the game-winner late in the first half.
Teemu Pulkkinen scored on his signature slap shot to pull Team Howe to within one, but it would stay 2-1. Delvecchio outshot Howe 16-14.
Red and White Line Change
Tomas Jurco will play the wing on the Richards-Tatar line. Previously, the spot was held by Darren Helm who suffered a concussion and shoulder separation on Friday. Most recently, the position was taken by Johan Franzen, who has returned from a concussion to have a great training camp.
Goalie Duel
It is unknown which of the two netminders will begin the season as starter, and this will be the first real test. The pre-season begins Tuesday in Chicago, the first of eight exhibition contests. That is where decisions will be made, but the Red and White game might as well be an exhibition game. Players are fighting to prove they belong on this team, and the ones who will be on the team at the start of the season are fighting for position in the lineup. Jimmy Howard will start for Team Red while Petr Mrazek will start for Team White.
The Red and White game will take place at 12:00 ET at Centre Ice Arena, following a practice by non-Red and White players.
