Today in hockey history, a few individual milestones, a goalie record obtained by probably not the first person you’d think of, and a milestone for an Original Six team.
January 14, 1988 – Denis Potvin became the first defenseman in NHL history (and the 66th player overall) to score 300 career goals when he scored in the Islanders 8-5 win over the visiting Quebec Nordiques (four have done it since). He would only score 10 more goals in his career, and his record would eventually be shattered by Ray Bourque, who topped him by an even hundred.
January 14, 1962 – Terry Sawchuk became the first goaltender in Detroit’s history to win 300 games with the Red Wings. The milestone came in a 2-1 penalty-free game against the visiting Rangers in, with today’s NHL, what one can assume to be the last game that ever had fewer than six penalties in the game.
January 14, 1990 – The New York Rangers beat the Flyers 4-3 in overtime to win their 1,000th home game. The victory gave them a lifetime record of 1,000-715-373 at Madison Square Garden. Sadly, only three Cups in that span, though, none of which had been won on their home ice.
January 14, 2003 – Ottawa’s Patrick Lalime became the fastest goaltender in NHL history to record 25 shutouts when he recorded his third consecutive shutout in a 7-0 win against the visiting Lightning. He accomplished the feat in his 236th career game. He also holds a few Senators-specific records, including wins in a season (39 in 2002-03), career wins, (146) and playoff wins (21).
