Australia welcomes new pro ice hockey league the NHSL (National Hockey Super League)

Adelaide will be the host of the first professional Ice Hockey League in Australia.

The National Hockey Super League (NHSL) is a professional ice hockey league in Australia comprising of three teams with the goal to have 15 teams Australia wide by 2023.

In year 1, the NHSL will feature three teams made up of predominantly South Australian-based players but will expand to a national format next summer to showcase the best talent Australia has to offer.

The first three team names are the Noarlunga Stars, Port Adelaide Brewers and Adelaide XTreme. Each team contains a reference to South Australia or the Ice Hockey community in the state.

Games will be played on Friday nights in front of a crowd at the IceArenA. The competition will be an enjoyable, entertaining family experience that will highlight the fast-paced action ice hockey offers.

The league will feature a rulebook similar to the NHL.

 

Three well known South Australian ice hockey figures will be appointed as a General Manager to run each of the teams. The General Managers will be tasked with finding a coach and drafting their team from a pool of registered players.

Each General Manager is allowed to contract two marquee players to build their team around, but the player can not be from the same club in the IHSA season.

 

The season is expected to commence at the beginning of November. General Managers have been confirmed and will be announced shortly. Draft dates, team names, on league rules will be announced soon.

All you can do now is sit back and get ready for the ride.

The rest of the team will be filled out at the NHSL Draft in mid-October. If players wish to be drafted, they must nominate themselves. They can do so by clicking here. Just because you’ve nominated does not guarantee you are drafted.

SUMMARY
– 3 team competition hosted every Friday at the Ice ArenA (Stars, XTreme and Brewers)

– Players who wish to play are encouraged to nominate for the draft (Mid-October). The three General Managers will draft players from the eligible player pool;

– Season to start in November. Draft in October.
